The Sheep Are Back!

Sunday, June 12th 2016

Every year, just before the summer turns the fields brown, the local shepherd starts bringing in the sheep to clear the fields.

They seem to be hungry the entire time they are awake and it doesn’t take long for them to clean up a field.

It is such a joy to come home and see all of these beautiful faces looking at us. They always seem to have the look that seems as if they are asking what we think we are doing there.

When the shepherds bring in the sheep they let them run down the streets and have several dogs that guide them into the appropriate fields. It is such a wonderful sight to see all of them taking up the entire road, and amazes me how they are able to keep them all controlled.

We have been lucky to have them come twice a year for the last few years so we are able to enjoy them longer. I wish we could have them as permanent residents of the surrounding fields!

One of the closest fields is packed full of all of the new birth arrivals this year! They are so adorable!

As this blog is primarily about things that I believe enrich our lives, I wanted to share some of the photos of these wonderful, temporary neighbors of mine. I hope you enjoy them!

  1. Thanks for the pictures Yvonne,. We live near the Santa Monica mountains and the homeowners use sheep and goats to reduce the fire hazard of the dry hills. Don’t you just love the Border Collies – they are so smart! They are actually the smartest of the breeds and compete in televised sheep trials in Britain each year. Interestingly if you ever get a Collie that has no black on it (all white) the sheep won’t take orders from that one.

    1. How interesting that they won’t take orders from the white ones, wonder if it is possible they have trouble seeing white? Thanks Jean, it is always nice to hear from you!
